unicode playlist - utf-16 BOM m3u (reading)

I know there's m3u8 meanwhile, but there are some players that use unicode m3u with BOM, which I think is better because:
- better support with text editors
- no encoding/decoding needed (assuming the application supports unicode)
- BOM; m3u8 just uses another extension, but not any hint in the content.
It would be nice if you could support loading these m3u files.

update: there seems to be a utf8 BOM, somehow my editor handled those even, if it can't save to utf8.
