  • Windows Phone 8

Yes I searched. Didn't find much but wanted to state my wishlist item.

WP8 app that will play my music straight from the cloud (SkyDrive). Like Google Play Music does. Surprisingly they don't have an equivalent on WP8 yet.

I've used WinAmp since the beginning in 1997. It's not always my primary player but I always seem to come back to it. I just made the jump from Android to WP8 and hate the though of not having it on my Windows phone.

Blast if you want. It seems like a simple enough request.

    Thanks.

I'll be glad just to see a Winamp app for WP8

And would be cool if the app can control my desktop Winamp too via wifi.

doubtful it'll ever happen, what with Android being the focus. same thing for a Windows Modern UI based version for Windows 8 / RT.

Although my WP7 has a really nice built-in player (Zune), it's definitely not as awesome as Winamp. I'll be getting a WP8 sometime in the near future since my contract is almost up (got my WP7 when they launched two years ago), so I won't be able to put Winamp in my pocket for a long time yet... even though I wish I could.

Winamp never leaves my computer, though.

            You're wrong...

I'm currently streaming music from the cloud via windows phone 8 right now. You have to open the windows 8 music app from a windows 8 computer and it will take an inventory of your collection and automatically cloud sync it to your windows phone 8 device.

Outside of that the app is complete garbage unfortunately.

                Windows Phone 8

They just had white 920 unfortunately. I want to check the yellow one out before I buy it though.

Oh, I guess it was only the velvety/matt finish then as I didnt know it was polycarbonate like lumia.
They had dark blue 8x on display. Nice colour If I was buying it then I would have definitely gone for the blue one.

                Which one you going for?

It seems kinda ironic that for windows phones there isn't a WINAMP app. I mean, the WIN from WINamp stands for windows as far as I know.

And after 3 years of using WINAMP on android, this is the only app that I really miss ever since I switched from android to windows phone. I really don't think that a basic WINAMP app for this platform is an unreasonable request, infact, it should be a must do!

and are you (and everyone else wanting it) going to pay for it to be developed ? i doubt it and i suspect that's why nothing has been done towards making a WinPhone app (and with being a small team focusing on Windows and Android and Mac is enough work as it is without another platform). plus it's starting another product from scratch and it's taken 4yrs to get WAFA to where it is, so a Windows Phone app you're looking at at least 2yrs (possibly more) to get it comparable if that can be done. and there's also not forgetting the market share issue...

I would pay even 10$ to install the app. Fair point, I know nothing about available resources for this "project" and if it would be financially worthy or not. That being said, to claim that it would take 2 years or more to develop a WP app that is comparable to the one available on android is rubbish in my book. For one thing, in those 4 years of development that you mentioned, I bet that there were a lot of trials and errors for which the correct outcome is known by now. You already know what the finished product is going to be, you do not need to go trough the entire evolutionary process of the original.

I am not an IT guy, but I do interact with enough software developers to know that a dedicated team should be able to come up in 3-4 months with an app that has 80% of the android versions functionality. I for one would be happy with it even if it would only play the music stored on the phone. It is only a question of commitment, which, in terms, depends of the financials. But it would sure nice to have it.

i think the 3-4 months is unrealistic even with a dedicated team of a couple of people who know all about WP development and all that is entailed with developing for that platform.

my '2 years' is getting to something that is realistically feature complete and comparable to what's wanted for it (likely being compared to the Android app) and trying to work out most of the bugs (as it'd be buggy no matter how good the team is making it for a while).

it's just more realistic to assume there is never going to be a WP version of Winamp as it just doesn't fit in with how and where Winamp has been going.

Well, at first, 2 years sounded too much for me too, but look at these Release notes of Player Pro, it took more than 2 years to this team to achieve a quite complete player, and you are talking about a complete team of developers only focused on that...

Well, yes. It did took that product that much to get to its current form. But that is evolution and development. Trial and error. They made a product, released it, collected feedback and ideas and improved the product and learned along the way. That takes time and it is only natural. My argument was that by now, to develop the same product to a new platform, you do not need to go trough the same learning curve. You know what the users like and what they use and what features are redundant. So, from my perspective, the only thing left to do would be the coding. Again, I must stress out that I am not an IT guy.

Now, since my last posting I did have some conversations about this subject and it was pointed out to me that indeed, 3-4 months might not be enough for a job like this, especially since all mobile platforms have their own specific traits in terms of architecture and interface. I accept this argument since my windows phone feels and interacts very different than my other android phones. Also I must accept the argument that the team responsible for Winamp is in an entirely different league in terms of resources than other software developers, and here I am referring to the gaming industry, where a complex game (relatively speaking) is popped out every 12 months.

Alas, this is all academic. Android is the dominating platform in terms of market share and it does makes sense to focus all efforts there. If I were to return to that platform I would install Winamp again. Not because it is already purchased, but because until now it is the best player on android that I have found. Also, it is the single app for which I was unable to find an equivalent or better WP app and I miss it dearly.
