  • will pay for voice control plugin (long)

I am in need of a plugin for Winamp that will allow me to have voice control in my in-car computer. I know the discussion has been raised before that it will not work well because the computer cannot understand someone over the sound of the music. Please read on for my solution.

I currently use a ATI Remote Wonder for control. This works fine for all normal commands such as play and volume buttons. The problem is having 1000+ songs loaded into a single playlist takes a very long time to move through and is difficult to find a particular song.

What I would like the plugin to do is to simply be able to select music by artist, song or genre. For example I might say: "Computer, Play, Artist, Alan Jackson" and it would select all the songs (based on ID3 tags) by Alan Jackson. Same thing for song and genre.

Now, as long as Winamp is playing music the plugin should ignore any sounds coming through the microphone. That way there is no way that Winamp will get any commands that it usually would from the music from the stereo. All regular controls can be made from the remote, so if I want to stop it early and select different songs, that can be done. As soon as I stop the music, the plugin should start listening for a keyphrase (like "computer") to begin taking commands.

I have already tried several pieces of software and none seem to be able to do this correctly. If there is one out there that you know works well, I would be interested in hearing about it. As of yet, I don't believe that one exists so here is my offer:

I will pay a developer to write this plugin. I really only need it for myself, but from reading these forums, it seems like this has been a need for the entire Winamp community. I don't have a lot to spend, but if a contribution would encourage someone to develop this, let me know. Maybe a few other people could chip it to get someone to do this.

Let me know what you think of this idea and if anyone wants to help, please reply.

i dont really think this is gonna happen. you would need to train the app to recognise a voice/accent/dialect, it would have to distinguish from background noise and already playing music... it is posible.. but, not what someone is going to do i think

He said he would not have music playing when he issued commands, and as for background noise, that is something for him to figure out by getting a better microphone.

Anyway, I'm no expert on voice recognition software (never even used it) but if you got a voice recognition software suite (a good one, they run 200 bucks or so) It should be able to do a text output of your voice. Now someone would have to write a winamp plugin that 'listened' to the voice recognition software and when certain words come up it does a certain thing. Unfortunately, given the nature of the searching in winamp, you would need a very up to date processor to make it work smoothly.

Getting more complex you could do boolean commands etc. I have a feeling that in this situation you would be much better off putting your music in the media library rather than one big playlist because of the library's superior sorting and searching functions.

there is actualy an other way to do it... get a plugin that on 1st load.. asks you to say... play, previous, pause, stop, next
and recoreds each one to a differnt file.... when u give a command... it checks the voice pattern against the one it has recoreded, if its within a certian preset... do what u said... still would require quite a bit of code

Microsoft provides a speech engine that developers can use to create speech software. Version 5.1 can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/old/sapi5.asp

Someone has already used it to create a Winamp plugin, but they never really finished it (http://www.voodoo-voice.com). I don't think it would be as much work as you seem to think since the speech engine is already written by Microsoft.
